Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn sit down for a conversation about the pull between curiosity and certainty, and why one tends to open life up while the other can quietly shut it down. Catherine shares how being over-certain has, at times in her life, blocked her from learning things she needed to learn, while too much curiosity has sent her chasing so many ideas at once that she loses focus, and why she believes curiosity is ultimately the more creative and life-opening of the two. Roy reflects on watching his grandmother and her siblings, and later his own mother, hold onto certainty rooted in stories they had told themselves for years, and shares a personal example of being completely certain he started Kung Fu at 16, only to find an old letter proving he was actually 13. The conversation turns to how getting curious rather than defensive, asking why am I certain of this, can peel back the layers of a belief and bring us closer to the truth. Catherine recalls being challenged during her master's in humanistic psychology to argue a philosophical debate from every side rather than her own opinion, and Roy shares how he built a similar exercise into his own Toastmasters club by having pro and con sides argue the opposite of what they actually believe. They close with a simple challenge: next time you catch yourself feeling certain about something, try arguing the opposite point of view, just to see what happens.
